That actually rotates the shoulders as far as possible into external rotation. So in Down Dog there should be even pressure throughout the hands (focus on the base of the index finger), creating an internal rotation (called pronation of the forearm) countered against the external rotation of the shoulders which turns the eyes of the elbows forward. Thus you should be ready for chaturanga.
Please note that I'm no doctor or yoga instructor. Just a massage therapist who specializes in stretching and has been studying yoga for over twenty years. This is my understanding, but I would never counter instructions from an Iyengar Instructor. Trust them.TonysBodyworkhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12546670881805636581noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4312247198139313019.post-58677162694397995242016-04-11T15:00:51.943-04:002016-04-11T15:00:51.943-04:00I have a question regarding the elbows in this pos...I have a question regarding the elbows in this pose. We are always taught to keep the creases of the elbows pointing towards each other to maintain the external rotation of the humerus in the shoulder joint - how do we avoid internal rotation in this pose and protect the elbows and the shoulders during the lowering down phase. In my ashtanga yoga classes I've always been instructed to set my hands below the shoulders while in your drawings I see they are set further back in order to make a right angle with the arms. May the setting of one's hands below the shoulder cause any injury? Is that wrong? I mean, do most of the yoga teachers I had teach it wrong?

Thanks so much,
LucaAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02679123456293506681noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4312247198139313019.post-61364573752296958052013-11-16T20:35:40.972-05:002013-11-16T20:35:40.972-05:00Insightful, as always, Ray. Your comments on satya and asatya are as insightful and applicable to life as your yoga posts. And your example of fabricated scientific data was enlightening. I find examples of similar statements from medical professionals from time to time, but not being a doctor myself (yet) I choose my battles carefully. Thank you very much for the work you do in sharing yoga (and your thoughts) with the public. It is all very inspiring.
Namaste,
TonyTonysBodyworkhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12546670881805636581noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4312247198139313019.post-49184274635464349282013-10-30T21:50:27.349-04:002013-10-30T21:50:27.349-04:00Good to hear, Miguel! Understanding and practice should be a balance of both form and function (and continuing learning).

Thanks for commenting!

Rayrayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04616253855622556472noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4312247198139313019.post-58176761107421961302012-01-11T12:16:14.655-05:002012-01-11T12:16:14.655-05:00so informativeso informativegnanadeephttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10758946846977322712noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4312247198139313019.post-92223299054831509652012-01-11T03:47:11.639-05:002012-01-11T03:47:11.639-05:00Thanks for an interesting post as usual. I would say that anatomic knowledge which can be linked to the feed-back signaling we receive within the body give us important tools to try to find balance and flexibility to stay mobile and prevent injuries. Whether we do that in the context of yoga or some other physical practise involving variated muscle strengthening and stretching is of lesser importance I believe. In yoga and as in other sports activities you run the risque of being injured if you pay more attention to form than function. Which in turn may create fear unless you try to find the reason for the problemsSvennoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4312247198139313019.post-14509069356812345392012-01-10T17:43:13.717-05:002012-01-10T17:43:13.717-05:00Many thanks, Joe!
