As a slow warm up and way of easing into yoga practice, I do a series of movements, starting in child's pose: inhaling to table, exhaling to bring body forward, dropping legs/belly/chest/forehead to floor--all the time keeping elbows tucked close to ribs and working the triceps. (I adjust the hands to make sure they are at chest.) Inhaling, I "peel" up in reverse - head/chest/belly - pausing momentarily before exhaling through table to an almost-child's pose. The hands remain fixed so that they will be in place for the next forward movement, so the bum won't make it all the way back to extended child's pose. Its a great upper bod strengthener, moves the spine nicely, and warms up the body. Moving very s l o w l y is the key for me, lengthening the breath, allowing it to guide the movement.

It prob'ly would be better to begin lying face down, positioning hands, but I love a good wide-leg child's pose when I hit the mat!

Hope to get back to Costa Rica for another "week in paradise" w/you & Chris.

Best,
Patty - Roanoke Patteeceehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15072344072088362416noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4312247198139313019.post-88879487615644987392015-05-11T01:47:51.824-04:002015-05-11T01:47:51.824-04:00Chaturanga is the reason I have avoided picking up...Chaturanga is the reason I have avoided picking up a regular yoga practice again. I am recovering from surgery, chemo and radio for breast cancer and have had some real problems with mobility and strength in my shoulder caused by scar tissue in the axilla. I will also have them rest their sternum on the block, fire up their legs, draw in and engage the bandhas then lift their hands off the floor to really tap into the danda/staff like aspect of the pose. Sometimes I will have them put another block between their knees or thighs which can be another reminder.
Thanks again Ray and Chris! I met you both when you were in Cleveland years ago for a workshop at the Atma Center and continue to use your books. I cannot say enough how useful they are along with your ezines. From the previous post, I have already picked up some cues to encourage people to keep their lower back neutral *in* this pose, but I still see those who hyperextend their lower back as they come back from chaturanga dandrasana to plank (leaving their hips down as they push the upper body up). If you have any thoughts on that, I'd love to read about them.Sheri DHnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4312247198139313019.post-32204307432530076592012-03-03T21:25:22.960-05:002012-03-03T21:25:22.960-05:00tipicamente 9 x 5.5 x 3 pulgadas, salud!tipicamente 9 x 5.5 x 3 pulgadas, salud!rayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04616253855622556472noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4312247198139313019.post-25533970395690248682012-03-03T20:15:33.279-05:002012-03-03T20:15:33.279-05:00Por favor deseo saber el tamaño del bloque utlizad...Por favor deseo saber el tamaño del bloque utlizado

Gracias

ManuAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4312247198139313019.post-91623768578368558312012-03-03T12:21:50.618-05:002012-03-03T12:21:50.618-05:00Hello Sabine, Thanks for commenting!
